My soft sheets gently rubbed my bare arms as I reached across my bed, idly rubbing them as I stared up at the dark ceiling. Music played in the background, but I was restless. My eyelids drooped with exhaustion but every time I let them close, I felt wide awake again, tossing and turning endlessly.

Just another night where I fall into my thoughts, into the ache, into the never-ending hurt.

The rest of the house slept, silent except for the distant hum of the appliances downstairs. Alone.

"One day." I whispered to absolutely no one, my tone croaky with sleep. "One day, I will not be alone."

My eyes fluttered closed briefly as the music continued, and in an instant, I felt like I was no longer within my body, drifting, falling apart bit-by-bit until all that was left was music. I wasn't me; the girl laying on the bed was fine with that.

The pain numbed into nothingness, leaving only more music behind. There was no me, there was no house, there were no memories, but there was music. I was music. I lived in it, my past had turned into music. It was all music.

And in the darkness, there was a pause where the music faltered, but just as soon as it was noticed, a little voice, shaky and broken, quietly joined the tune. The music from the slowly-dying laptop melded with the melody of a girl singing carelessly off-key, tears welling up in her eyes as she rasped out the words.

"We were running in the dark; we were following our hearts. And we would fall down, and we would slowly fall apart. And we would slowly fall into the dark."

"You know it only breaks my heart to see you standing in the dark alone, waiting there for me to come back..." My whisper-soft voice...
